Superficial siderosis.

چکیده
Case 1 An elderly patient presented with insidious onset of sensorineural hearing loss. The past history was unremarkable except for insidious onset of weakness of left lower limb. Physical examination revealed left hemiparesis with upgoing left plantar. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain revealed a large flow void in the interpeduncular cistern suggestive of aneurysm arising from the top of the basilar artery. In addition, hypointense signal was noted (prominent on T2 and FLAIR images) on the surface of both cerebral hemispheres, the pons, cerebellar folia and medulla. The final diagnosis was superficial siderosis secondary to leaking basilar artery aneurysm [Figures 1 and 2].

Superficial siderosis: a potential diagnostic marker of cerebral amyloid angiopathy in Alzheimer disease.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system results from chronic bleeding in the superficial layers of the cortex and spinal cord. In cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), there is amyloid deposition in meningeal and meningo-cortical arteries and capillaries, predisposing them to rupture. CAA is frequently associated with Alzheimer disease (AD). METHODS We report a...
متن کاملSuperficial siderosis of the central nervous system: A case report
Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system is secondary to chronic subarachnoid bleeding. However, the underlying etiology is not always detected. Superficial siderosis can be diagnosed at MRI by the presence of a hypointense rim along the brain surface on gradient echo T2W images. The authors report a case of superficial cerebral siderosis where the underlying etiology remained undiag...
متن کاملDiagnostic Significance of Cortical Superficial Siderosis for Alzheimer Disease in Patients with Cognitive Impairment.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Because the diagnostic significance of cortical superficial siderosis for Alzheimer disease and the association between cortical superficial siderosis and the topographic distribution of cerebral microbleeds have been unclear, we investigated the association between cortical superficial siderosis and clinicoradiologic characteristics of patients with cognitive impairment....
متن کاملA patient with superficial siderosis, intraspinal cyst, low-pressure headache and low-lying cord.
Superficial siderosis is a rare condition caused by deposition of hemosiderin in the central nervous system. In recent years, it has been used to identify dural defects connecting the intrathecal space with the intraspinal fluid-filled collection seen in patients with superficial siderosis. However rare reports describe the association of low-lying cord in superficial siderosis patients. We pre...
متن کاملSuperficial siderosis of the central nervous system many years after neurosurgical procedures.
Recurrent haemorrhage into the subarachnoid space causes superficial siderosis, which clinically manifests as cerebellar ataxia, sensorineural hearing loss, and myelopathy. Two patients developed clinical, radiological, and biochemical evidence of superficial siderosis many years after surgery. One had two posterior fossa operations, a left temporal craniectomy, and radiotherapy for a presumed ...
متن کاملPilot safety trial of deferiprone in 10 subjects with superficial siderosis.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Superficial siderosis is a neurodegenerative disease caused by toxic accumulation of hemosiderin on the surface of the brain and spinal cord for which there is no known effective treatment. METHODS Oral deferiprone, a lipid-soluble iron chelator with ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, at a dose of 30 mg/kg per day was tested for safety in an open pilot study in 1...
